After obtaining a degree in forestry, Ed Smith worked for the NC Forest Service, a forestry consulting and surveying firm, as County Mapper for Craven county, as a timber buyer for Weyerhauser and Canal Wood, and at a civil engineering firm.

A talent for architectural renderings in pen and ink and potrait paintings in acrylic and pastel developed into a new career in the mid 80s as an illustrator for a graphics firm doing technical illustrations for clients such as Bosch Tools and Aftermarket Parts. This was followed by several years of fulltime freelance work from a home studio in eastern NC doing traditional illustration and pre-press layout and design for the print industry.

After moving the studio to western NC in the mid 90s and a year stint doing computer layout and design work for a professional off-set print company in Asheville, several more years of fulltime freelance work developed into building dynamic, database driven websites with Coldfusion and SQL programming languages.

An offer to work in the Art Department of a major textile plant was accepted in 2001, resulting in 6 years of design and illustration work (in both colored pencil and computer illustration software) for clients such as Belk, Pennys, Kohls, Sears, Disney Studios, Bass Pro Shops, Graceland, etc.

A move was made several years ago to return to fulltime freelance work developing websites, layout design and illustration for both print and web.

Current work includes an exclusive contract of several years with The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University developing a health awareness and obesity program for the NC Public School System. This project (www.matchwellness.org) includes all phases of web, database, graphics, animation, video and prepress work and is funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC and The Kate B. Reynolds Foundation.
